Christmas in The Park Tear Down & Helping a Gentleman in Need Stay Warm this Winter

By Br. Rick Rolfe

Thanks to the eleven Knights who helped with the take down of our Christmas Nativity scene in the park. It was noted that it was much easier than last year when a few inches of ice covered the display.

The parts were transported to our storage unit in James Rodrigues’ trailer and tucked away for another year.

Several Knights then went to Gerry McCleary's house and loaded donated fire wood into James’ trailer and transported it to Amaranth to help keep a needy man who has no heating other than a wood stove.

We were faced with obstacles in accessing the wood but miraculously these barriers were removed so we could complete our work. We will keep this man from freezing this winter.

There are those who fall through the cracks of the social service net.

By A. Zilio

On Sunday, October 19th our council held our annual communion breakfast with over 60 people in attendance. We all enjoyed the breakfast which was prepared by volunteer Knights.  After the meal our council presented certificates of merit to two individuals who through their contributions of time and talents have helped to make our faith community more caring and meaningful;  Sheila Gossen and  Murray Goodfellow.

Sheila Gossen, a long-time member of the Catholic Women's League (C.W.L.) has served her community and our parish for most of her adult life. While raising her seven children, mostly on her own, she found the time to volunteer at the Alton Legion serving at weddings and other functions. She assisted in many fund-raising activities that the C.W.L. including knitting and donating items for their annual bazaar. In 1961, when St. Peter School opened as the first catholic school in our area, she was one of the first people to enroll her children at the school. For several years she was a lector at our week-day masses and continues to support and donate to catholic and humanitarian causes.

Murray Goodfellow, joined the Knights of Columbus in 1957 and received his 4th degree in 1976. Since joining the Knights he has served in many capacities. He has served as Grand Knight, District Deputy, Faithful Navigator, Chairman of the Diocesan Association and Regional Chairman. Murray has also served in executive positions on various councils and assemblies. To this day at the age of 88, he is a lector, an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist and a member of one of our parish choirs.

Members of our Council helped out Br. Rick Rolfe by cleaning up wet hey
after a roof collapse from the winter ice storm.

By Br. R. Rolfe

Thanks to Brothers Mike Brooks, Mike Coupland, his son Kyle Coupland, Mike Collins and Rob Traverso for helping to clean out over 200 bales of hay from my shed.

The shed roof collapsed in the winter leaving the hay soaked by melting snow and then rain.

It was a hard dirty job.

Wet, moldy hay is a real hazard that can burst into flames from spontaneous combustion.

On the evening of June 20th a large group of brother Knights gathered in Fr. Sean’s backyard for our annual year end barbeque. It was a great event. Everyone enjoyed themselves! There was steak, chicken, and fish available to BBQ and a great spread of side dishes was provided including Al’s secret stewed mushrooms.

During the evening WGK Terry Barrett took some time to thank all members of our council for their hard work during the year. He also recognized some members who were present with degree certificates and then presented a certificate of appreciation to Fr. Sean for his service as Chaplin for our Council. Thank you Fr. Sean.

Normally the evening would conclude with brothers enjoying some bacci ball or pony races, but this year we decided to take the time to assemble four basket ball nets for the St. Timothy parish basket tournament. As typical guys, we all under-estimated the scope of the task and refused to read the instruction manual. Consequently we worked well past nightfall and had to resort to using flash lights to see what we were doing.
