A Safe Wheel Chair Platform

Council 8851 has completed yet another charity project that has concretely impacted the daily life of a local family in need of help.

Yashin Rehmanji is a local boy who suffers from a degenerative disease called Friedreich’s Ataxia. It has now progressed to the point where he is confined to a wheel chair.

Yashin is an active boy who attends school everyday like all of his contemporaries. He has also been growing like his friends his age. This has given rise to the challenge of getting him and his wheel chair in and out of their home everyday.

The family managed to find a used powered wheel chair lift on Kijiji and then used some scrap building materials to build a make-shift platform to interface the lift with their entrance door.

You can see by the photograph that this platform was not very safe. This is when Yashin’s mother asked us for help.

Brs. John Moffat and Michael Goodfellow visited the family to assess the situation. What followed was visit by Br. John and Br. Tim Ulrich to establish what it would take to equip this family with a proper platform solution.

Our council then approved a notice of motion to spend over $2,900 to have Br. Tim Ulrich and his company, Headwaters Contracting, to design and build a proper platform with safe stairs and hand rails.

As you can see, Yashin and his Father are pleased with the result.

Thank you to Brother John Moffatt, Michael Goodfellow, and Tim Ulrich for their involvement in this project!

Cemetery Sunday

5/17/2015

Many parishioners joined the Knights of Columbus on Sunday, May 17, to pray for the dead as Fr Sean provided inspirational readings and those present then placed flowers on the graves of loved ones.  Council 8851 of the Knights of Columbus organizes Cemetery Sunday because it is important to continue to pray for the dead and to help families bring closure at the loss of a loved one.

Brother Al Zillio led the reciting of the Rosary.  Participating by leading a decade were Ed Wallace, Sheila Gossen, Rod Gallant, Bernadette Price and Corey Philips.

An important part of Cemetery Sunday this year was the Fourth Degree conducting a sword presentation ceremony at the grave of each of the ten Knights buried in this cemetery, as well as at the grave of Kaitlin Bolton, who was the Motorcycle Ride Patron for several years.  DGK Roy Hancock, laid flowers at each of the deceased Knights as well as Kaitlin. Fr. Sean blessed the flowers before they were placed on the graves.

The Fourth Degree consisting of Brother Knights Paul Hatton, Jean Paul Gauthier, Michael Goodfellow, Murray Goodfellow, and Al Zilio provided the honour guard as Fr Sean read from scripture.  The praying of the Rosary continues through the summer on the second Monday of every month at 7 PM at the cemetery. All are welcome!

Again this year our council supported the bus transportation for St. Timothy parishioners to attend the Ottawa March for Life. Twenty-seven people including five brother Knights from our council made the long trip to Ottawa.

It was a great day on the hill and at the event, which was the largest gathering on parliament hill other than for Canada day. It was peaceful as usual. If you look closely at the photo you will see a 4th degree Knight walking by.

Clearly the Knights are a prominent group in the crowd!

By Br. Dino Dottori
This year, the popular event took place in the St Timothy Church Hall, on Tuesday, May 12.  Over sixty spectators, families of the participants, packed the church hall to cheer and support their candidates.
Moderator, Brother Ken Moore said, "The teachers are to be commended this year for a very well prepared group of students."

Nineteen students met the challenge, starting with words at the grade 6 level and reaching quickly into the grade 8 list. .  Finally, only two students remained standing to go another sixteen rounds until the winner was declared!  The winning word was "marriage" and the last word mis-spelled was "vegetable."  Brother Rod Gallant, a judge, said that this was one of the toughest spelling bees he has seen, and "the parents can be proud of all the children."

The first place winner was Cole Purdell-Lewis from Maple Academy and the second place winner was Cindy Desjardins from Ecole Elementaire des Quartres.  Both winners received keeper plaques as well as cash prizes from Council 8851.  The event concluded with Brother Les Sabo, from Summit Books in Mono.
